writing advice !

1. the best writing advice i've received is that writing is just a combination of concrete and abstract ideas. concrete would be describing tangible details that are in-scene, while abstract would include backstory and emotions. bonus tip: when writing a narrative, it's best to begin and end a scene with concrete writing to keep things on track for both you and the reader.

2. when writing a metaphor, simile, allegory, etc. write it for features you want to emphasize, not just any features. for example, if a character hates frogs, would they say its skin was green as grass, or that mucus ran down its skin like the sludge of sewage water?

3. one of the most powerful literary techniques is synesthesia, aka combining the five senses. for example, describing a bright color as 'loud.'

4. vary your sentence length and structure. a story is like a song in the way that you need to get creative with its rhythm.

5. make sure that, in every scene, the main characters are feeling and thinking different things---it'll create a great dynamic and provide natural tension.

6. for conflict, make your character(s) have to sacrifice one of their desires for another one.

7. a story should include both internal and external conflicts, not one or the other.
